As part of our Matariki study, we have been reading some of the legends that explain why we have the seven star constellation which disappears for a few weeks each year. For our writing activity we had to choose one of the legends to retell in our own words. Everyone chose the same one!!! The legend of the Seven Fish By Alyssia
The fishes’ Mum said to the seven fish “you don’t go to swim in the sea or Tataraimaka the giant will catch you.” The seven fish forgot what their mother said and the giant caught the seven fish. Tane tried to save the seven fish by throwing them into the sky. The mother fish tried to find them but she couldn't, and that’s how they became the seven stars. The Seven Fish By Sasha The Mum fish said stay by the rocks because Tataraimaka is coming fishing but the fish forgot Mum’s words and they got caught. The man was upset and he threw the seven fish up in the air and the sevenfish turned into stars. The Seven Stars Story By Ike The Mum said to the kids “stay by the rocks so he can’t get you” but he got them and threw them up into the sky and they turned into stars. The Seven Fish of Matariki By Scarlet There were seven little fish and the Mum said “stay by the rocks or else you’ll get caught by Taitaraimaka the giant. But the fish forgot to stay by the rocks and then Taitaraimaka came and the God of Light felt bad and threw the net into the sky and the fish turned into stars. The Legend of the Seven Fish By Tyla The Mum fish said “stay by the rocks” and she also said “be careful of Tataraimaka the giant that is going fishing”. They forgot, and they got caught and Tane the god threw them in the sky and they were stars. .

Well done Room 3 - I didn't know that legend and really enjoyed the way you retold it. I will look at those seven stars differently now when I see them in the sky.
